Simplicity

Steve Sherk Photography - Seoul Photographer Korea

There’s no shortage of ways to overcomplicate our lives. Whether it’s through technology, different interests, commitments, and busy schedules - there’s always something you can be busy with. While it’s great to be productive, being busy is something different. Living a busy and complicated life can often be an excuse for someone who’s looking to appear having a meaningful life. Life doesn’t need to be complicated in order to be useful.

People who are workaholics are usually either trying to escape something or trying to fill their lives up so that they can use it as leverage and avoid taking the blame if trouble comes up. The expression “work smarter, not harder” applies especially to this situation. Long hours and excessive work don’t make for a productive or better person. It may mean that person is unavailable for longer amounts of time due to work.

No one should be lazy - it’s obviously great to be productive. However, we have a responsibility as people to be attentive, not only to our own personal health, but to those around us. We need to be present to our families, friends, and those within our community. Finding the balance among the basics of working, eating, sleeping, and socializing is paramount to living a well-balanced and effective life.

No family needs an absent parent, sibling, son or daughter. No matter how hard you work at a job, your reputation or amount of money you earn doesn’t compare to quality time spent with those you love. Keep things simple. It’s easy to overcomplicate life by overcompensating for feelings of inadequacy in certain areas.

No one is perfect and we balance each other out. Every person has something important to offer, and we cannot put a higher worth on one person than another. This will only lead to frustration and contempt for others or ourselves.

We should simply accept that we are who we are. We all have strengths and we all have weaknesses. There is no scale for judging who is more valuable than another because different strengths are vital in different situations. We don’t always need an “alpha male” to dominate a situation with a strong opinion. The loudest person who speaks isn’t always the person with the right mindset.

Accept your strengths - and your weirdness. Those traits make you the person people need you to be. It’s a breath of fresh air when you find someone who doesn’t take him or herself too seriously - someone who feels comfortable within their own skin. The world needs people to be unique to who they are.

The way you are created is enough to be effective and useful if you have the right priorities in mind. Life doesn’t need to be complicated to achieve usefulness. Keep things simple – life and opportunities will flow more easily. For related reading, please read A Positive Mind.
