Where Are We Going?

Without a belief or specific direction to go towards, it’s easy to just follow the crowd and become more concerned about fitting in. However, if the majority of the crowd is doing that same thing, then where is everyone going? One of the bigger mysteries of life to me is how common it is to find people who don’t really think about life, it’s complexity, the design of everything, and the meaning behind it. Everything around us is so obviously created and designed, we would have to consciously tell ourselves that life is meaningless only because we wished it were.

When I was younger, I put a priority on having fun, going to parties, drinking, and living within that lifestyle. However, my consciousness was always pulling at me. It was like a constant sense of uneasiness. It felt as if something inside me was always telling me that I don’t belong there. Partying was just a passing phase, it wasn’t a lifestyle I belonged in, and I was more like a tourist than anything - passing by, experiencing, and observing.

At that time, I wanted life to be simply fun and somewhat meaningless because that would have meant that I could live however I wanted. However, I couldn’t actually convince myself of this. Whatever was deep inside of me wouldn’t allow me to shut my eyes to the evidence around me that everything was so perfectly created and designed. The incongruence of my lifestyle in comparison to what I felt inside led me to a lot of stress – and ultimately a lot of questions.

Life isn’t meant to be lived in moderation - you can’t find a balance between good and evil. You have to commit and live a lifestyle, or all is in vain. When I finally understood that God is real, I still hung onto a lot of habits that I knew were contradictory and destructive. I was selfish and didn’t want to let go of those habits, but thought I could still be a “good enough” Christian at the same time. However it’s true when the Bible says you cannot serve two masters. You will end up serving one and hating the other.

It wasn’t until I understood how I needed to completely respect and follow God’s Word in which I knew peace could actually be found. We may mistakenly think our natural desires and lusts for the world are what we need and are what are good for us. However, they are what cause our own destruction and disorder. God’s advice for our life is an outline for love and peace. It’s not simply a bunch of rules telling us what we can’t do. Life isn’t meant to be easy. Through discipline and hardships we grow stronger and better.

What is discipline? It’s resistance from doing something that you “want.” Not everything we want is good for us. We need to make decisions and choices that may seem difficult, but as we grow and learn through obedience, we begin to understand why God tells us why we should or shouldn’t do certain things. Love is at the root and a life of peace is the result.
